The Los Angeles Dodgers will open the 2013 MLB Season as the most expensive team in the league. Whether that will reflect on the team itself is still to be played out but fans should know that a huge chunk of their $230 million payroll is dedicated to players no longer on the roster (think Manny Ramirez and Andruw Jones).
New team co-owner Ervin “Magic” Johnson is relishing the role that normally belongs to the NY Yankees.
“I don’t want them to worry about expectations. It’s not about the payroll,” Johnson said recently. “Look, every team wants to win the World Series coming in. That’s what it’s about. And we should want to win it and if we don’t we should say, ‘Hey, it wasn’t the season we wanted.’ It’s really that simple.”
Magic is thinking playoffs all the way and finally getting back to the Fall Classic last played by a Dodgers team in 1988.
“Yeah, if we get to the playoffs it’s been a successful season,” Johnson said. “But I want to go all the way. That’s just me. Sometimes you have to take baby steps to get there. Sometimes you have to make the playoffs, understand what that’s about. Yeah, we can have a successful season without winning it all. But I want to win it all.”
